The soul of Estrela

Estrela is Lisbon's quiet drawing room. It is residential without being dull — embassies tuck between tiled townhouses, the Portuguese parliament meets at São Bento, and the white dome of the 18th-century Basilica anchors every view. Mornings start at the Jardim da Estrela: joggers circling the duck pond, grandparents reading at the open-air library kiosk, toddlers on the wooden swings. By late afternoon the tree-lined streets along Rua Domingos Sequeira and Rua da Estrela fill with families walking home from the French lycée. Dining here is unfussy but serious: Café São Bento for one of the city's best steaks, Tasca da Esquina for petiscos, Senhor Uva for natural wines. Tram 28 stops here before the tourist crush begins further east. Expats who live in Estrela rarely move — they trade it only for Lapa.
