The soul of Alfama

Alfama is the only Lisbon quarter that survived the 1755 earthquake intact — and you can tell. The alleys follow no grid, laundry hangs between windows, elderly neighbors play cards on their doorsteps while tourists hunt for their Airbnb. Fado was born here and still lives here: Clube de Fado, Mesa dos Frades, A Baiuca — every night. The Tuesday/Saturday Feira da Ladra at Santa Clara is still a genuine flea market. But Alfama is also the most gentrified neighborhood in the city: too many short-term rentals, summer crowds pressing up the stepped streets, long-time residents priced out. Buying in Alfama means accepting steps everywhere, no car, elderly neighbors who'll offer you port wine, and possibly 500 people a day walking past your window. It's a choice made with the heart, not the spreadsheet.

Who lives here
MixedPopulation très mixte : anciens habitants portugais (population vieillissante), jeunes professionnels créatifs, expats bohèmes (US, Brésil, France), forte proportion de propriétaires en tourisme courte durée non-résidents.
